With great honor and respect, Newberry County Council recognized K9 Coba, with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, via a Resolution, for his ultimate sacrifice during the pursuit of justice in Newberry County.
On June 11, 2024, Coba was killed in the line of duty while Newberry County Sheriff’s deputies and SLED agents attempted to serve a fugitive felony warrant in Prosperity. Coba served alongside Special Agent Richard “Cole” Powell and lived with his family.
Newberry County Council recognized Coba for his sacrifice and expressed their gratitude and deepest sympathies to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and Special Agent Powell and his family.

Newberry County Council recognizes employees for their service to the county – in five-year increments – during their monthly meetings.
At the August 21, 2024, meeting, Newberry County Council proudly recognized three employees for their years of service to Newberry County!
First to be recognized was Shanta Samuel, who was unable to attend the meeting, with 10 years of service to Newberry County. Here is what County Administrator Jeff Shacker had to say of Shanta:
“Shanta joined the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office back in the Summer of 2014 and works at the Newberry County Detention Center.
“She is one of our field training officers on A-Shift and works with all the new employees to learn how the detention center runs.
“Shanta is known by her shift as “The Investigator” because she always stays one step ahead and keeps her finger on the pulse of the Newberry County Detention Center, the inmates, and her shift.
“Shanta makes the Newberry County Detention Center better because of her knowledge and because of her willingness to train new correctional officers.”
Brian Smith was also recognized for 10 years of service to Newberry County. Here is what Administrator Shacker had to say of Brian:
“Brian joined the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office back in 2014 and started as a correctional officer at the Newberry County Detention Center.
“In February 2017, he transitioned to the role of patrol deputy within the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and was promoted three years later to his current position as a sergeant and investigator.
“Brian is a member of the tracking team and the critical incident response team.
“Sheriff Lee Foster said that Brian is a natural leader, and he clearly has excelled at the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.”
Janice Allen was recognized for an astonishing 25 years of service to Newberry County. Administrator Shacker said the following of Janice:
“Janice joined the Newberry County Clerk of Court’s Office back in August of 1999.
“She initially took a part-time position in Newberry County Family Court and four months later went full-time.
“Janice has worked in several different areas of the Newberry County Clerk of Court’s Office over the years, currently working in Newberry County Family Court.
“She does a fantastic job, and Clerk to Court Beth Folk remarked the other day how willing Janice always is to help others and fill-in when needed.”

County of Newberry Recreation, in partnership with the Town of Prosperity and Newberry YMCA, needs your help! Due to record number of participants registered for youth soccer this year, we need coaches! We are looking for eight coaches to help with the program to work with our local youth for a fun season!
There are usually two events per week (practice/games) that last 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the age division.
